The Gilpin County High School baseball team chalked up a 6-4 win in its first game of the season against Mile High Academy of Denver (MHA) in away non-conference play on March 9. “A good win, considering it was our first time on a baseball field this year. We have a very young team with a big upside. They have a great desire to succeed,” said Coach Tony Lorenz.
The Eagles were off to a great start with 5 runs in the first inning, while MHA remained scoreless. Neither team put points on the board again until the fourth inning, when both of them scored one run. That was it for the Eagles, but MHA came in with 3 runs in the sixth inning.
Eryk Lorenz was selected as Player of the Game for Gilpin. “Eryk pitched an outstanding game, with 12 strikeouts and 2 walks in 4 innings pitched. He went 2 for 4 at the plate, had 2 singles, and 1 RBI,” Coach Lorenz noted.
Eryk’s brother Will pitched 3 innings, garnering 7 strikeouts and 1 save.
- Lorenz and Cooper Lindberg came in with 2 runs each. Sam Snyder also had 1 run batted in.
